• Pendants by their very nature are one of a kind.

•  First come the miners who excavate the rock from the earth. They sell the “rough” to lapidary .

•  The lapidary is a professional stone cutter. They shape the stones into various forms and sizes, depending on what they see. Some stones are calibrated to a standardized size and shape, some are free form. Some stones are cut to enhance or minimize inclusions, (naturally occurring internal foreign objects, crystals or grains of the same stone...breaks or fractures are not inclusions) or matrix, (veining of minerals within a stone.) Both of which can be quite dramatic and desirable depending on the stone and it’s cut. Some stones are cut to bring out the depth of color, some for translucency. A lapidaries in turn sell the cut and polished stones to the jeweler.

• The jeweler makes and then sets the stone in a bezel. The bezel holds the stone and acts as a base upon which the jeweler can build a frame. The frame can be classically simple or very ornate, and is used to enhance the innate beauty of the stone. Pendants are sold “as is” to be worn on a chain or cord of the customers choosing. Some pendants are incorporated into necklaces by the jeweler/designer. Beads and findings are used to build upon the pendant, complementing the central stone and creating a more refined and finished piece. Over time, the designers personal “style” emerges and is as unique as the  stones they work with.
